Summa Children's Foundation Honors A Better LA & Pete Carroll!

A Better LA's First Annual Gala Event On April 23

The Summa Children’s Foundation, a nonprofit making a difference in the lives of underprivileged Los Angeles children and their communities, today announced that its annual fundraising gala, A Night of Inspiration, will honor USC Football Coach, Pete Carroll.

The event will take place Wednesday, April 23 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, and is expected to draw upwards of 1,000 guests and raise over $1,000,000 to benefit A Better LA, a nonprofit founded by Carroll, and several children’s nonprofits throughout Los Angeles.

While Carroll may be best known for his victories on the field, his true success lies in his work to end gang-related violence affecting inner-city communities in South Los Angeles.  In partnering with Unity One and its founder, Darren “Bo” Taylor, Carroll has embarked on a personal mission to ensure that all young people in Los Angeles have hope about their futures and the means to fully realize their dreams.

Showing his dedication to neighborhood empowerment by embarking on late night visits to the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods, finding part-time jobs for over 40 reformed gang members, and using his media visibility to garner attention for these issues, Carroll exemplifies a leader who has created something incredible—a tangible way to change Los Angeles and the future of the children growing up in its communities.

“A Better LA could not be in better hands than with the Summa Children's Foundation,” says Carroll.  “This event will raise awareness for the special things that are happening for A Better LA, Unity One and the City of Los Angeles.”

Brian Werdesheim and Jim Miles, Co-Chairs of the Summa Children’s Foundation, also have high hopes for the event.

Our goal is to bring visibility to A Better LA and other deserving organizations, while inspiring current and future generations of philanthropists to give more of their time and money to children and youth in need,” said Werdesheim.“If we meet our expectations for A Night of Inspiration, our impact will be felt for decades.  The dollars raised will tell only a part of the story.”

The event, underwritten by Oppenheimer and The Summa Group, will be attended by a Who’s Who of the Los Angeles entertainment, sports, and business communities.  Set to perform are students from the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, a beneficiary of the Summa Children’s Foundation’s inaugural gala in 2005.
