The Bahian Institute of Permaculture (IPB) is a grassroots environmental and social justice NGO working in Bahia, northeastern Brazil. Our organisation is tiny, but our projects are huge, and affect the lives of hundreds of Bahian farmers and their families. We believe that the solutions to human and environmental poverty come from the people who face these realities, and we work together with farmers to develop projects based on principles of sustainable agriculture and strategies of community empowerment, with a focus on permaculture.
In the Sertão region where we work, "conventional" agriculture has intensified desertification, malnutrition, rural exodus and resource scarcity. Our projects work to transform this through establishing organic farming systems, strengthening community associations and networks, and running workshops on permaculture, bioconstruction, popular education and agroecology.
