Balou was rescued from a local zoo where he had been kept for 15 years in horrifying conditions. Each day the keepers at the zoo would beat him out of his nightroom and out into the exhibition area where he had nowhere to hide the taunting of the visitors who would throw things at him and scream to make him move.
When he first arrived at the Al Ma'wa New Hope centre, in October of 2010, to begin his first phase of rehabilitation, he would spend the days in his nightroom coming out only at night once he was sure that noone was around. The team at the centre worked very hard to build up the trust needed for balou to understand he was no longer at risk. Finally in the Spring of 2011 with the help of a Bear expert from the Four Paws Arbesbach Bear Park in Austria, Stephan, Balou tooko his first steps out of his nightroom and out into daylight! The next few months consisted of much work and building of trust and luckily Balou responded well and became the strong and confident soul he was born to be.
On October 2nd 2016, Balou was introduced to his new home at the Al Ma'wa Reserve where his new enclosure houses a wonderful pool for him to swim in, acres of land for him to roam on and many trees and hides for him to create his own dens and hides. he is settling in well at Al Ma'wa Reserve and we see daily improvements.
Please help us provide ongoing care for Balou and others like him in need. Your support is greatly appreciated.
