Multiple disasters have struck and terrorised South East Asia over the past week. On 26 September, tropical storm Ketsana swept across the Philippines and then forced its way into Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. On 30 September, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter Scale struck Sumatra in Indonesia.
Many of the people who have been hit hard by the disasters were already impoverished, and therefore, have few resources to cope. These vulnerable communities include urban population as well as rural farmers. Poorer people, especially women and girls, are under great risk.
