Data tabulated for Executive Director Amy Maglio's trip to the May 17-20 United Nations Girls' Education Initiative global conference show the impact WGEP is having in the communities where we work.

In 2009:

• More than 3,700 individuals particated in our scholarship, tutoring, adult literacy, educator training, health education, and community awareness programs

• We provided 240 full and partial scholarships to girls from 46 schools and 58 villages in the Fatik, Senegal and Tharaka, Kenya regions

• Retention rates are at an all-time high across the program: 93 percent in Senegal (up from 75 percent in 2006) and 97 percent in Kenya (from 93 percent in 2007

• Retention rates for girls in the Circumcision with Words alternative (to female genital mutilation) rite of passage program in Kenya are especially high: fully 100 percent of all girls who participated in CwW stay in school (compared to just 42 percent of all girls in school nationwide and 30 percent in rural Kenya)

• 75 percent of all scholars earned grades that were average or above, with 30 percent placing in the TOP FIVE of their class

• A marked increase in the number of girls attending school across the Fatik region, even in schools where our program does not operate
