In recent years, Vita introduced the Moringa Tree into Eritrea as part of our Building Sustainable Livelihoods Program to combat poverty and help environemental renewal.

Under the supervision of qualified horticulturists we carefully planted and nurtured the growth of hundreds of Miracle Trees in local seed nurseries. Then we distributed the young trees to as many communities and families as we possibly could. The results exceeded our highest expectations. The trees grew, providing an abundance of lifesaving food, medicines and clean water everywhere it was planted.
The fact that Moringa leaves could be consumed either cooked or raw has helped in increasing its popularity in a very short period of time.
The introduction of the Moringa tree in this area by Vita provides sustenance for families during the acute food shortages that occur in the long dry seasons. Mrs. Abrehet Kidane, a mother of three, heard about the Moringa tree during Vita’s farmers day. Once she tasted different recipes of Moringa leaf, she was encouraged and planted a couple of Moringa seedlings. She said that when she can’t afford to include some other ingredients such as eggs or meat, she simply cooks the leaves and add some garlic and the taste is terrific. She recommends that this tree should be introduced in all parts of Eritrea.
Because the Moringa Tree produces leaves during the dry season and during times of drought, it is a life giving source of green vegetable when little other food is available. Ounce for ounce, the leaves of the Moringa tree have more than three times the calcium of milk, slightly more potassium than bananas, more than twice the iron of spinach, and more than twice the vitamin C of oranges. Truly it is a …'Miracle Tree'.
For about €10 we can plant enough Miracle Trees to sustain the needs of an entire family. This is a wonderful, life-saving and life-giving tree. It's drought tolerant and in many areas of the world dishwater or wastewater provides the Moringa trees with all the nutrients they require to continue to work their ongoing miracle of providing food, medicine and clean water for all who are lucky enough to have these trees growing nearby.
