Dear Sir, Madam,
Volunteers for Africa Organization (VFA) was registered in the year 2001 in Kenya under the NGO Coordination Act (1990). VFA operates in Eastern Africa promoting volunteerism for sustainable development amongst poor and rural communities in the region; implementing development projects; and training communities and partners in development methodologies. Since its inception in 2001, VFA has striven to network people, grassroots organizations and resources within and outside Eastern Africa for sustainable development in the key areas of natural resources conservation, health and social development. VFA is run by a secretariat (Board of Directors) based in Nairobi. VFA implements its programme activities through effective partnership working with community members, groups, organizations and supporters drawn from within Eastern Africa and abroad.
The aim of VFA is empowering and strengthening local institutions and communities’ capacity to eradicate poverty, hunger and disease.
Its mission is to fight poverty and disease in Africa. VFA seeks to network people, organizations and resources in Eastern Africa for sustainable development in natural resources conservation and social development. VFA works mainly with community based groups and organizations in Eastern Africa assisting them acquire technical, human and financial resources from all parts of the world. It links them with other community groups and organizations, volunteer agencies, local and international volunteers, government agencies, and donors. This way VFA contributes towards poverty alleviation, promotion of active citizenship through voluntarism, and the overall socio-economic empowerment of grassroots populations in Eastern Africa.
We have also been linking volunteers in East Africa for many years now. Since the year 2002, we have been receiving and linking volunteers to projects in the region, most of them working in the fields of Environment (conservation projects), community projects, health projects, IT, media and sports, working with wildlife, teaching (as well as TOEFL), Language, sports coaching, hospitality as well as working with orphans and vulnerable children. Our placements have combined service and tourism, including travel, expeditions, adventure, tours, xtreme expeditions and xtreme sports, among other adventure programmes.
We have successfully placed over 50 volunteers from mainly Europe, on small scale, and now want to do volunteer placement and recruitment on a large scale. This is because there is a great demand for our programmes in East Africa. Presently we have 309 requests for volunteers to serve in rural and urban areas of East Africa. This is one of the reason why we are getting in touch with you, to see how we could together work in promoting volunteerism among your networks to organizations in East Africa, as well as support the various education, health and environment programmes that we run with rural women, children and youth in the region.
We would be happy to discuss this further with you, and most probably we will come-up with an amicable procedure for moving forward with the partnership. We are very optimistic that this is an opportunity we all want to be part of. We are happy to send to you our profile. You may also learn more about us by visiting our website at http://www.volunteerforafrica.org.
Looking forward to sharing more details on this initiative as soon as possible.
Yours faithfully,
Nicholas Ngece
Director

Toko Neba and the Anak Asuh Batam Foundation give rights to prisoners in Indonesia
EDE, The Netherlands - On the island of Batam in Indonesia the Anak Asuh Batam Foundation organized its fifth and sixth training for prison staff on human rights, the rights of children and trafficking for prison-staff.
Training Human rights and trafficking
The workshops were a great success and fitted well in the need for greater knowledge in the field of Human Rights and Child Rights. The trainings were attended by the Director of Human Rights (Justice) from Jakarta, the Governor of the prov. Kepri (Riau) the director of the Human Rights office of the province Kepri and the directors of all prisons in the region. The recommendations and conclusions of these workshops will be directly implemented in the laws and regulations of the province.
Anak Asuh Batam already is active in this field for over five years, with great success, to help prisoners and minors, as well as organizing workshops and training for improvement of the welfare and care within the prison walls. Impulsis, NCDO and Cordaid financed these projects.
Children's Pavilion
In the Batam prison a special children's pavilion was build to provide the children a special guidance and with this new pavilion, sex-abuse belongs to the past. In addition, there are sports, a department for patient care, a library, a computer section and 4 workshops for vocational training. The staff of the facility in collaboration with local religious communities built a mosque next to a church and a prayer room for Buddhist prisoners.
The imprisoned children are supervised by social workers from the Setara Kita foundation in Batam, the partner organization of Anak Asuh, under the leadership of nurse Annemarie Rulos van den Berg.
There also is an internal broadcast-station, so inmates can request music and useful information can be transmitted.
Thanks to the new facilities, the prisoners on the island of Batam have the opportunity to prepare themselves for a better future after release. Many inmates don’t experience the prison as a penal settlement, but rather as a correctional institution to acquire a stronger and better position in the society. The chance of recurrence of crime will become a lot smaller.
Crime dropped
Since the introduction and commissioning of the facilities, the number of problems between the prisoners themselves is more than halved. The children have their own section with TV and table tennis. On the sports facility they can relax, in the library they can read and study courses in computing.
Meanwhile, Anak Asuh Batam was requested by the Director for Human Rights in Jakarta to set up these applications for other prisons and also to organize training for structural improvements in the prisons.
New projects in Ternate and Jakarta?
The current Director of the Batam prison and his second man have had promotion and will be transferred to Jakarta and Ternate. Anak Asuh Foundation is currently investigating whether sufficient funds can be acquired to offer these other locations a similar program. The directors have a strong band with the foundation.
They are highly motivated and last year, at the invitation of Anak Asuh, they visited the prisons in Zutphen and Doetinchem.
Toko Neba and Anak Asuh Batam Foundation strongly hope to acquire sufficient funds with the sale of Indonesian handicraft in their shop: Toko Neba, in Ede, The Netherlands.
On August 22 their will be held a benefit program for the fundraising. www.tokoneba.nl www.anakasuh.nl
