Growing Together is a highly practical project working with the community of the Fountain Estate in Londonderry. The overall aim of the programme is to support local people to work together in order to enhance the quality of life for everyone living in this area.
The name has been chosen as it reflects the positive and interactive nature of the project which aims to engage all sections of the community and create intra community networks. Part of the project involves community gardening and so the name Growing Together is particularly appropriate. The project is a social support in the local area, enabling the community to work together and support each other through the various elements of the project.
Growing Together will provide various activities which the community can participate in. These activities will promote physical wellbeing; will promote positive mental health; and the family activities will encourage families to spend quality time together.
These activities will include:
1. Community gardening
2. Community based training workshops and information sessions
* Healthy body/healthy mind yoga/pilates etc.
* Cooking on a budget hands on training
* Healthy eating and nutritional education
* First Aid training
3. Various teambuilding, sporting, family and outdoor activities
The first element of the Growing Together project is the Community Garden. This has been designed and constructed and will be officially opened on 14th May 2010. On this day the local people who have applied for and been allocated one of the growing beds within the community garden will be presented with a starter pack to help them to plant and grow their produce.
As part of the gardening element of this project, a local gardener is conducting a series of workshops with the young people in the Youth Club, the local primary school and the adults within the community. These have already started and will continue into the early summer.
