Since 2006 the Community Center of St Bernard has been here to help St Bernard families get the help they need, whether it's food, clothes, medical care, legal aid, counseling, or other services. Today the residents of St Bernard Parish, who have already survived Hurricane Katrina, are facing another disaster as the Gulf Oil Spill spreads, moving ever closer to their coastline. The oil spill is threatening the fish and seafood that many St Bernard families depend on to earn their living. A commercial and recreational fishing ban is currently in effect, and fishermen are signing up for our food pantry so that they will be able to feed their families until they can find other work. The Community Center is here, ready to help them in any way we can.
Combining food and community we had our annual St Joseph's Day feast at the Community Center of St Bernard. Community members brought in beautifully decorated cakes, cookies, bread, and fish to adorn the altar here at the center. On Saturday everyone broke bread together.
Santa is on his way to the Community Center of St Bernard! This year's Annual Holiday Celebration and Toy GiveAway will be held on December 20, 2009 at the Community Center, 1107 LeBeau St in Arabi. Every child that comes will receive 3 free gifts!
Right now the Community Center is looking for partner agencies, groups and volunteers to help with obtaining new toys for the Toy Giveaway. Last year 684 children received toys, and we expect as many or more to attend this year. Anyone who can donate toys, organize a toy drive, or provide gift cards and funds to purchase toys should contact the Community Center at 504.281.2512 before December 15. We just finished interviewing a few community members that have some really inspirational things to say about how the Community Center has helped them. Please give it a watch and let us know what you think.
This year we were able to provide 340 separate families with food for thanksgiving. More then our original goal of 300! We couldn't have done it without the many, many donations from the community, the greater New Orleans community, and beyond!

Thanks for helping feed over 1,100 hurricane survivors this thanksgiving!
