    News of Michael Jackson’s death caused Google to crash temporarily as social media sites Facebook and Twitter were bombarded with people clamouring for news of about the king of pop’s demise. There were so many people across the world typing “Michael Jackson” into the search engine that Google believed it was being spammed.

    Users were greeted with this message when trying to access Google. "We're sorry ... but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application.”  A Google spokesperson in the US confirmed that it had “experienceddifficulty” for 35 minutes.News websites reported significantincreases in numbers,with CNN.com claiming a fivefoldincrease and 20 millionpage views in just over an hour.Keynote Systems which trackswebsite performance said areview of more than 30 onlinenews sites showed availabilityfell from 100% to 86% and theaverage time it took to accessthe home page of top mediasites jumped from 4.2 secondsto 8.9 seconds.

    In Australia, Ninemsn reportedan increase in hourly uniquebrowsers from 8am today comparedto the same time yesterdayof 373%, while News.com.ausaid the site had received twiceits normal daily traffic of around630,000. Traffic to Fairfax’sSMH.com.au rose by 30% inthree hours.Jackson’s name became themost written about term onTwitter taking all of the top ten“trending” topics at one point.Dozens of Facebook siteswere created and a Facebookspokeswoman in the US saiduser’s status updates were runningat three times the normalpace and there was a markedincrease in wall posts and videopostings.

    If you haven't already noticed, I'm pleased to let you know that that fundraising communities are now a reality on ammado.  Anyone starting a community on ammado can also help raise funds for our very worthy nonprofit friends on the platform.
    A fundraising community can be created for fun runs, work fundraising days, school fetes, weddings, birthdays, etc.  You can invite your friends  to join your community, where you can regularly update them on your progress by posting news updates, videos and photos.  You can start conversations and poll your members.  There's also barometer gauge to show how much money you've raised so far.  
    Friends, family, colleague and donors from all over the world can make donations easily as we accept over 30 different currencies and almost every payment method available (including Paypal).  
    Any charity registered and approved to receive donations on ammado can be made a beneficiary of your fundraising efforts.  The funds will be distributed directly to the organisation(s) you have chosen
    the ammado fundraising communities are a very viral and instant way of connecting people to your cause and raising funds.  I can testify:
    I created my 'Will Mon Make It?' late last week as I indent to run in this year's city2surf. Over 40 of my friends, contacts and colleagues have joined and have already donated $275 to support the charities I care about.  Only 46 days and $725 to raise 'til race day...

  • Canon photo competition for causes.

    Canon Australia has launched  a competition 'Canon Creative for a Cause, where people are asked to take a photo that represents
     
    the charitable cause they feel most passionate about and upload it to their website.  The competition will firstly be judged by popular vote to reach 24 contestants, then will be vote will be taken to an expert panel where one winner will chosen

    The winning photo will be awarded $60,000 and donated to the winning photographer's nominated charity. The Canon Creative for a Cause launch coincides with the release of Canon’s Charitable Giving Survey which suggests that despite being a nation of charitable people, Australians are shunning smaller causes in favour of high profile appeals, leaving smaller charities inadequately funded.

    As World Environment Day is coming up on June 5, we're planning to launch a campaign on the platform to promote our nonprofits around the world that support environmental causes.
    From
    May 29th - June 15th
    we will be encouraging people to show their support and donate to environmental charities on ammado.
