Turner broadcasts to every section of society and feels that the best way to make sure it is providing services that everyone can identify with is to have staff as diverse as its audiences. That's what we mean by 'Turner For All' and as part of this we are funding bursaries for disabled people who have been trained to work in TV by Leonard Cheshire Disability's Media Training Centre.

There were many high quality applications which were whittled down to a shortlist of four who came in to meet CNN's features head James Donald and Richard Rowe who is responsible for acquiring hit shows for Cartoon Network. 

Winner Jack Townsend (aged 18) from Bermondsey, London said: “I was speechless when I heard the news, I never dreamed I’d get the bursary!

I’m severely dyslexic and dyspraxic, and throughout school my teachers would assume I was just being lazy and sideline me. It happened so much that I just got used to being treated that way – then I went to the Ability Media Training Centre. It changed my life; I met trained staff who could never give too much time to teaching me and gave me the skill and confidence to apply for the bursary.

I plan to set up my own production company for disabled and non disabled people. The bursary will fund my first film camera – a Sony Z1.”

Budding TV presenter Oliver Wilkinson (pictured) the second winner, from Canonbury, London said:  “When I was 19 I was in a car crash, which damaged my lymphatic system. Since then, it’s been very important to me to have control over the structure of my working day.

“I was just in my office e-mailing contacts about brighteyedboy, the production company I’m setting up, when I found out about the bursary. It gave me such a lift, because they were so enthusiastic about my TV presenting skills. I’ve so many plans for spending the money; I’m going to invest in some top quality media business skills training, and improve my website. Equally importantly, Turner will give me the contacts to help build up my TV presenting work. I’m absolutely delighted!”

Nick Hart of Turner Broadcasting said: “We felt strongly there was a need to increase the representation of disabled people in the workforce and embarked on this partnership to make this happen. We have been so impressed with the standard of applications we have agreed with Leonard Cheshire Disability to make the bursaries an annual event.”

Jane Jutsum, Leonard Cheshire Disability’s Director of Strategic Partnerships & Innovative Services, said: “These bursaries will help the successful students gain the experience and the insight needed to make a successful future career and use their talents. COMMERCIAL FREE CHRISTMAS ON TCM

TCM (Turner Classic Movies) is running a ‘Commercial Free Christmas’ where instead of showing advertisements they are donating space on air and on line to promote Plan UK, Turner’s charity partner on its African School Building project.

Plan will appear as the sponsor of two days uninterrupted and commercial free classic films including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Wizard of Oz, Ben Hur, Oceans 11 and 12 and Gone with the Wind throughout Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

TCM is also featuring Plan banner adverts online encouraging viewers to sponsor a child this Christmas – you can see these at www.tcmuk.tv over the festive period.

A DAY TO REMEMBER!

10 London staff spent an unforgettable day at the Elgin Day Centre giving a Christmas party to the old people.

The volunteers wrote a quiz, brought loads of goodies and presents and kept the people at the day centre entertained all day. Many of them are in the 90s and hardly go out and some don't have families to spend Christmas with so this day was extra special for them. There was an entertainer and everyone sang and danced and had a great time.

It was particularly poignant because Westminster Council is closing the centre so this will be the last Christmas party there and the old people are now wondering where they will go in the new year.

CREATING AN EDIBLE PLAYGROUND

A manager in ITwanted a volunteer day for his team and chose to help create an Edible Playground for a Primary School in Southall.

This Trees For Cities project stems from the increasing disconnect between consumers and the food they eat so they create multi-purpose spaces which incorporate fruiting orchards, raised beds, natural play features and outdoor classrooms.

It was a sunny day in late October and the team spent a very enjoyable day in the school garden. They moved tons of earth so all ached the next day but thought it was worth it!

TURNER VOLUNTEERS

Every year during one week in the autumn Turner offices around the world arrange volunteers days for staff and in London in 2011 we arranged events over three days:

The first one saw a group 'Colour A Child's Life' with Kids Company as they transformed the flat of a poor and disadvantaged family. In the morning it had dirty paint, a filthy broken old sofa and was in a really bad way but by the end of the day was transformed into a clean and cheerful place for the child to grow up.

The second day was at a Centrepoint hostel for homeless young people. The large garden was unusable because it was full of weeds and overgrown trees and bushes and had gone completely wild. Turner supplied a truck load of new plants and equipment and in a day the garden was transformed into a lovely space for the homeless people to enjoy.

And on the last day of the month another group went  to work with Mencap and people from their day centre on another garden. Turner volunteers have worked on this one before and we have donated money as it is looked after by people with learning difficulties some of whom have had work experience here.

SUCCESS!

Conrad Daly came to Turner over a year ago from a homeless charity and is so good that not only is he now a regular freelancer but has also started his own editing and animation business, Quinton Media.

An unfortunate series of events led Conrad into a correctional institution and then to a life on the streets but with some help and a lot of determination he is now making a great success of his life and is regularly asked to speak at events as an inspiration to others.

Conrad came to Turner through Business Action on Homelessness in autumn 2010 to work with the Turner Commercial Productions team.  It was meant to be for a month but Conrad made himself very useful and now works in video and image editing as well as 3D animation as a freelancer and has also set up Quinton Media to offer a variety of media services.

AUGUST 2011

A team of 12 from Turner's IT and Operations department spent a couple of days in the woods in southern England with the National Trust. Working on an eco-house they helped make items for it including hundreds of roof shingles cut from the surrounding woods.

JULY 2011

Turner Broadcasting won two Silver and one Bronze Award for its work with Plan International and The Big Issue at the prestigious Corporate Engagement Awards.

JUNE 2011

 

• An intrepid group of Turner volunteers abseil off Battersea Power Station in London to raise money for Clic Sargeant.
• A team of 12 from Turner's Operations department paints three flats and clears and plants a garden for Centrepoint's Camberwell Hostel which is home to 80 homeless young people.
• A group from Turner spends a morning at a primary school in east London talking to young children about their jobs and how they got them. There were a lot of very good questions from the 10 year olds who we hope will follow us into an enjoyable career in TV in a few years time.

 

MAY 2011

In Spain Turner is supporting Plan International’s ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign by providing 100 scholarships for them. It will cost E10,000 and the CSR gave them funds to get it started and the rest will come from employees and various fund raising activities that they are holding throughout the year. They are also collecting signatures to create September 22nd as International Girls’ Day and they are donating airtime and web banners to help achieve it.

In London a team of 10 from Turner's Operations department spend a very enjoyable day with the children of The Coram School in central London improving their garden. Turner provided planters, earth and shrubs and the volunteers worked hard all day.

APRIL 2011

A team of 20 volunteers from Turner's offices in London, Paris, Munich, Rome and Madrid spent a week in rural Malawi helping to build a school that they had fundraised over £40,000 to pay for. Working with local masons they made the bricks and built the walls of the school as well as a house for the teachers. This is the third African school that Turner staff have built with Plan International - the others are in Mali and Rwanda.

MARCH 2011

TURNER is working with Leonard Cheshire Disability and its Ability Media Training centre as part of its campaign to let people know that Turner is as an attractive employer for people with disabilities. We are funding two bursaries for disabled people trained at their centre and are running this advertisement in Able Magazine and other targeted websites and publications. It is part of Turner's 'Turner For All' campaign -- we broadcast to all sections of society and the best way to make sure that we are offering the best services for them all is to have all sections of society working here as well.

Christmas came early at the Elgin Centre when a group from Turner turned up with presents, songs, chocolates and loads of things to make greetings cards with. They spent a very enjoyable day at the Day Centre and everyone is looking forward to their visit this time next year.

On a freezing, blustery November night 13 intrepid Turner volunteers risked pneumonia by sleeping out at Spitalfields Market to raise money for Centrepoint. They raised around £3000 and joined several hundred other people and celebrities in this annual event.

Also in November, 40 employees from Turner's Munich office left their computers to use their volunteer time and met at a Kindergarten to help redecorate. They painted the house and the windows as well as building some shelves and Turner paid for a workbench so the kids can now enjoy their new workspace. They painted most of the rooms in the main house and the creativity room got some blackboard paint so that the kids can now write on the wall with crayons.

SEPTEMBER 2010

Volunteers from Turner's London office joined their colleagues around the world to help their local communities. One group worked with the London Wildlife Trust improving the Greenway which is the route that all visitors to the Olymics will take in 2012.

Another group went to the historic Hanbury Hall off Brick Lane to give it a much needed make-over in preparation for the Spitalfields Festival.

CNN'S SHOW 'ICON' talks to the real "Mad Men" and takes an in-depth look at the world of advertising. The programme catches up with renowned advertising guru David Droga,  who set the CNN team the task of making a commercial to promote volunteering. CENTREPOINT & THE NATIONAL GALLERY:  Turner often looks for new ways to work with charities and in talking to First Impressions which has used art as therapy for young offenders we wondered what would happen if we invited a group of ex-homeless people from Centrepoint to be trained as artists for a week.

They were all taken around the National Gallery and shown famous portraits by Van Eyck and Cezanne and then art teachers at Central St Martin's art school spent four afternoons with the volunteers teaching them to paint.

Starting by photographing them in similar poses to the paintings in the Gallery they then showed them how to transfer the image in pencil onto canvas.They then painted their own self portraits and the results were amazing - so much so that one of the ex-homeless volunteers is now going to art school.

The pictures were exhibited in a top gallery in Hampstead and will be shown later in the year at the Broadgate Centre in Liverpool Street.They will also be exhibited here at Turner House and the artists will be invited in to see them. Prince William is the patron of Centrepoint and we are hoping to persuade him to sit for one of the artists in future!

 AUGUST 2010

• When Turner's school building volunteers were in Rwanda earlier in the year they met a lot of local children including a little boy who was very shy because of his cleft lip. Everyone felt very sorry for him so we asked the local office of Plan International to find out how much it would cost to operate and agreed that Turner would pay for it. So on August 19 the boy and his mother went to the King Faisal Hospital in Kigali, Rwanda for this life changing operation. One of Turner's volunteers is sponsoring the child through Plan International’s scheme and so will be in touch with him and we will be able to monitor his progress.
• Another group volunteered to work on a garden at a Centrpoint house in west London which was very dirty and overgrown. 20 young people live in the flats and now that we have cleaned it up and planted lots of bushes, roses and shrubs they can use this attractive outside space and enjoy the rest of the summer.

  

JULY 2010

A group from Turner and is sister Time Warner companies (Warner Bros and IPC) transformed a north London school. The tatty annex was emptied out, cleaned and repainted inside and then painted sky blue on the outside. The huge circular school hall was also given a facelift -- it would take one person weeks but the group of 30 got it done in a couple of hours. When parents came to collect their kids at the end of the day they hardly recognised the place.

Another group raised money and ran the London 10K run to raise money for the National Children's Bureau which also arranged the north London school painting day.

JUNE 2010

Taking a cue from Mary Portas a group of volunteers livened up the Age Concern shop in Paddington by dressing as classic Hollywood film stars and handing out leaflets they had made. Custom was up 100% in the first couple of hours and they also donated lots of stock from the TCM, CNN and Cartoon Network cupboards. Then they spent the afternoon with people at Age Concern's nearby day centre dancing and singing and showing off their classic clothes.

Turner is a finalist in both the Best Overseas and Best Media project categories of the Business Charity Awards 2010 for its collaboration with The Big Issue and school building projects with Plan International.

APRIL 2010

Turner paid for two sheds for Mencap's gardens in Streatham and 10 staff spent the day constructing them and helping with the gardening.

FEBRUARY 2010

After spending six months fundraising almost £40,000, twenty Turner staff from our London, Rome and Munich offices spent a week in Rwanda helping to build a new wing for a school there. As well as working on the foundations they taught English and sports and visited projects and villages with our partner charity Plan International.

JANUARY 2010

Following the devastating earthquake which rocked Haiti on the 12th January CNN presenter Don Riddell remembered a signed St Andrews Open Championships golf flag he had left from his time as a Golf Anchor. He auctioned this unique piece of sporting memorabilia on eBay for Plan UK’s Haiti Earthquake Appeal. One freezing November night two of Turner's board members and the head of CSR sleep out at Spitalfields Market to raise over £2500 for the Centrepoint charity.

OCTOBER 2009

20 staff from Turner's UK, German, Spanish and Italian offices are currently fundraising to build a school in Rwanda and in February 2010 they will spend a week there helping with construction. This is the second school that Turner has built and the company is providing funds, giving staff time off and donating commercial airtime on CNN to its charity partner, Plan International.

SEPTEMBER 2009

This year there were three charity events to choose from on Turner Volunteer Day and of course the greatest attraction were the cute animals at Hearing Dogs for Deaf People! A group went to their training centre in Buckinghamshire and painted several of the rooms where people go to get to know the dogs that will help them in the everyday lives.

Another team spent the day in west London's Boston Manor Playing Field completly transforming its filthy old pavillion which had been painted black and looked like the set for a horror film. They painted the long corridor and nine changing rooms a cheerful blue so it will be much nicer for the kids and disabled groups that use it.

Others spent the day meeting the vendors and the people involved in the Big Issue magazine. They got together with the editor in the afternoon and wrote up their experiences for an article which will be appearing in the magazine shortly.

JULY 2009

90 people from Turner and its Time Warner sister companies AOL, IPC and Warner Bros spend the day with Kids Co at a school in East London painting a mural, holding a sports day, helping out at the art class and loads of other activities.

JUNE 2009

The Mali School Building Project team from Turner is awarded Time Warner's Heiskell Award for the best Group Community Service activity and is presented with a cheque for $10,000 at a ceremony in New York. The money was given to Plan International towards the next school that Turner will build in Africa.

MAY 2009

Turn Turner Green hold an Environmental Fortnight to encourage staff to help the company reduce its 4500 tonne carbon footprint and £1million pound electricity bill. 16 staff volunteers for a Trees For Cities day improving the landscape at the Kennington Park Estate.

APRIL 2009

Turner works with the BBC, ITV, Sky and other major broadcasters to create the CDN Diversity Pledge which sets out to change the face of television, onscreen and off, by more accurately reflecting our multicultural society.


March 2009

20 volunteers from Turner’s London, Milan and Munich offices raised over £30,000 and spent a week in Mali building a school to replace the old grass hut where children are taught at the moment. It is on the edge of a village called Farada which is in the middle of the countryside, a two and a half hour drive across country from Bamako, the capital.

The group were greeted by around 1000 people as this is the biggest thing that has happened there for a long time. Everyone in the village and from several miles around came to welcome the team and sing and dance. The villagers live very much as they have done for thousands of years with no electricity or phones, still living in traditional mud huts and growing everything they need. They have a short life span because of disease and lack of amenities but are extremely happy and hospitable. The new school will mean that the children can get a better education as they won’t have to go home when it rains or when the locusts come and they now have latrines and a well which will make their daily lives a lot easier.

The villagers all helped with the building project, even the women who would not normally do this kind of work but were inspired by the women on our team. There are professional masons in charge of the project which will be finished soon.

THE BIG ISSUE
Volunteers from CNN made a series of short documentary interviews of the winners of the Big Issue's first Real Lives, Real Achievements awards. They were also on the judging panel and helped give out the awards at the ceremony in London. It was the cover story on the Big Issue magazine on March 23rd .

FEBRUARY 2009

A group of volunteers each fundraised £750 for Sense, the deafblind charity, and took part in the Team Ice Challenge at Broadgate Circle Ice Rink in February. Cheered on by their supporters the team came a impressive second in judging by Nicky Slater from ITV's Dancing on Ice. Team Captain Ivan Betts says that they were robbed of their victory and will be back next year to win!

20 staff from Turner’s offices in London, Munich and Milan volunteer to raise money and help build a school in Mali.

In March 2009 they will be building a proper school with sanitation, three classrooms and equipment which will immediately benefit the 150 pupils and change life in the village forever.

CNN is also helping out by giving airtime and space on its website to promote Plan International and we will be working with our business partners to give help as well.

A group from the IT department spent the day at a Centrepoint house in north London renovating a garden that was completely overgrown. By the end of the afternoon it has beds for growing vegetables, shrubs and even a bench.



People from around the company spent time at a junior school in London's East End at their 'Aspirations Day' which encourages 3 to 11 year old to think about what they would like to do when they grow up.

A group of staff play at the annual Homeless World Cup 6-a-side fundraising tournament in Liverpool and CNN donates airtime to promote it internationally.

60 staff spent a day working on projects with Kids Company children in South London in an event inspired by a feature on CNN. Teams from Turner Broadcasting around the word volunteered in events to celebrate the company's 10 years of volunteering.

August 2008

 UNICEF writes to thank Turner for showing its short film "The Gift" across CNN's international news channel saying that the "support provided by CNN has been astounding, with the film having been aired 1913 times across the world between May and August 2008."

July 2008

Cartoon Network donates the services of it popular character Ben 10 to Mencap for its annual Spellathon which is designed to teach children to spell. By recruiting Ben to back the competition, Mencap hopes to motivate children to take part and successful schools will receive a visit from one of Ben’s alien superheroes as a reward for their good work.

Diane Abbott MP’s ‘Young Black Achievers’ visit Turner and meet staff from around the company to learn about life in the media.

Around 90 staff from Turner and its sister companies Time Warner, AOL, IPC and Warner Bros met up at the Trees for Cities site in South London to work on a woodland improvement project. The Peabody project focuses on improving urban woodlands and green areas to create an oasis so local residents (and animals!) can enjoy the area.

Time Warner gave Turner some money to donate to charity and we picked the Pepo La Tumaini Jangwani HIV/AIDS community centre in Kenya. The money has paid for food and drugs for two years, a major HIV testing campaign and the they have just bought this much needed vehicle as they are located in the countryside and serve a huge area.

• Turner held a sale of its channels' giveaway items and samples to staff and raised £2274.50 which will be divided between the Burma Cyclone Appeal and the National Children’s Bureau.

• The Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) invites Turner to be included in its ‘Diverse Britain 2009’ publication.

• CNN donates airtime to UNICEF worth a six figure sum to promote ‘The Gift’ with Gwyneth Paltrow

• Turner launches a Cycle to Work scheme for staff offering half price bikes.

• Turner's Environmental committee launches a 'Say NO to Plastic Bags' environmental campaign having given all staff jute bags with the ‘Turn Turner Green’ logo.

• Turner launches the Media Trust's Media Mentoring scheme for staff to mentor disadvantaged kids.

• 30 staff sign up for this year's National Children’s Bureau 10k mini-marathon.

• CNN gives airtime for a commercial promoting the S.A.F.E. charity which the company has also donated funds to make.

• A team of 20 from Turner travel to South Africa with Habitat for Humanity. They build two houses for families affected by HIV/AIDS in the Kwa-Zulu Natal.

• As part of Time Warner, the company comes 26th in the 2008 Stonewall Workplace Equality Index, which showcases the UK’s top 100 employers for gay people.

• Fair Trade drinks machines are introduced throughout the company.

• In 2007 Turner hires 174 people with 23 (13.2%) from ethnic backgrounds.

• Staff play for their colleagues in Turner's Charity Music Showcase to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.

• The Business Development team dress up as cartoon characters and take presents donated by staff to the kids at the Royal Marsden Hospital.

• Turner and parent company Time Warner come in top three for Race For Opportunity award.

• A new double sided, swipe card controlled printing system with recycled paper is introduced to radically reduce paper usage.

• MP Diane Abbott hosts the second annual London Schools and the Black Child Achievement Awards in the wake of a summer of bad press for young Black people. Turner Broadcasting is a sponsor of the awards at the House of Commons.

• 10 staff go out with The Big Issue to learn more about the charity, provide their expertise on how the Big Issue can work more effectively and agree to make a commercial to run on the company’s channels.

• Volunteering is up from 24% with 38% of staff now giving their time to charity.

• Staff hold three sales of promotional items raising £2556 for charity.

• A volunteer creates cartoon figures of the Juvenile Diabetes charity's mascots.

• Turner takes an intern from Mencap with Cerebral Palsy who is now employed full time.

• The Voice newspaper publishes a feature on Turner’s assistance of the Pepo La Tumaini project in Kenya.

• Turner Broadcasting, ITV, Channel 4, Warner Bros and IPC are the first companies to work with The Media Trust on its new Youth Mentoring initiative funded by the Department for Media, Culture and Sport. Tessa Jowell, Culture Secretary , launches the scheme which brings together media professionals and people aged 14-25 at risk of anti-social behaviour to work together on specific projects.

• A volunteer creates a website for Pepo La Tumaini Jangwani to help raise funds and awareness.

• On World AIDS day CNN’s chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour speaks to Turner staff about the AIDS situation in Africa. Turner sells Red Ribbons and a huge collection box is filled by staff when asked to provide clothes and toys for the AIDS orphans of Kenya.

• Volunteers take a group of special needs children from Community Links to London Zoo for the day.

• Turner provides funds and sends Scooby-Doo to Keith Vaz MP’s Westminster children’s party, a pre-school in Bristol and others to celebrate Christmas. It also provided toys and funds to a variety of other charities.

• Two local street sellers and staff from the Big Issue visit staff from Turner’s entertainment channels to tell their story and introduce themselves. CSR and The Big Issue start working together on a long term partnership for volunteering and airtime.

• Turner donates to its Caretoon Network charities including Childline, National Children’s Bureau, 4Children, Barnardo’s, Mencap and The Children’s Society.

• A team from Turner’s Business Development department dress as cartoon characters and distribute presents at a Shooting Stars hospice.

• Volunteers shoot and create an advertisement for Theatre for a Change and CNN donates airtime for on-air campaign.

• Volunteers create a logo for the Zamcog charity and others design and print charity cards for the them.

• Turner’s President, its head of CSR and two staff members visit the Pepo La Tumaini (Winds of Hope in the Arid) project in northern Kenya which provides schooling and a home for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS as well as support for adults living with the disease. As guests of UNICEF the group also visited hospitals, schools and households living with the disease and money raised by the company will fund a new vehicle, food and education for hundreds of children.

• Turner supports Black History Month in the London borough of Southwark which has the biggest Afro-Caribbean and African population in the country and 40% of its residents are of African decent.

• The London Benchmark Group reports Turner’s community contributions were worth more than £4 million. It also reported that nearly a quarter (24.2%) of employees were involved in community activities. This puts the company into The Percent Club as one of the UK’s one hundred most generous companies.

• The Turn Turner Green intranet is launched with lots of advice and ideas for staff.

• 65 staff, Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Daphne and celebrity special guests garden, decorate, paint cartoons and entertain the kids at a disadvantaged school in London’s King’s Cross for the day.

• Turner’s Berlin office join Berlin Volunteer Day to help clean up their city.

• Two London staff sell kebabs and raise over £500 for the Red Cross to go to the children caught up in the Israeli/Lebanese conflict.

• Cartoon Network and The Prince of Wales’s Foundation for Children and the Arts launch the Great Art Quest to bring works of art to life for 2000 children.

• Turner gives work experience to six homeless people through Business Action on Homelessness.

• Turner’s Diversity Week has speakers included Ben Summerskill from Stonewall, the London Mayor's equality advisor as well as leading figures in the fields of race, sexuality, homelessness and fair recruitment. There was also a senior management forum, a film screening and a pub quiz.

• Following the disaster in South Asia, CSR ran appeal announcements for the UN World Food Programme, UNICEF and the Disasters and Emergency Committeeacross Turner channels.

• StoryQuest, a joint venture between Cartoon Network and the Prince of Wales Arts and Kids Foundation, was the country’s largest ever travelling story festival visiting cities around the UK, to encourage literacy in over 13,000 11-13 year old children. Participants included Michael Morpurgo, Jacqueline Wilson, Benjamin Zephaniah and the grand finale was held at the Royal Albert Hall.

August 2005

• Cartoon Network supports YCTV - Youth Culture TV - helping young people get into the media. They provided the Toon Room Animation suite, which was designed by a Cartoon Network UK graphics team. Ruby Wax opened the room for the educational charity which gives 11 to 20 year olds the opportunity to make their own TV programmes.

• Turner introduces the STARS programme to give internships to eight students for up to eight weeks. STARS is designed to develop, encourage and mentor talented youth from diverse backgrounds who have an interest in working in the media.

• Turner Broadcasting set up the Caretoon Network so that its kids channels can keep in touch with the problems facing its audience and to provide charities with access to its viewers, research, well known characters and assistance with fundraising. Caretoon Network members include

March 2005

• Amongst Turner's Christmas donations is a cheque for Childline which its founder Esther Rantzen accepts from Scooby-Doo.

• Cartoon Network created an advertisement for UNICEF’s Day for a Change and time was donated on Turner’s UK children’s channels.

 TURNER'S CSR AWARDS

Turner donates around £20 million worth of airtime a year and together with other donations this put it into The Percent Club alongside The Body Shop, BBC and Sainsbury’s as one of the UK’s one hundred most generous companies.

 Captain Planet is the original environmental superhero. The brainchild of Ted Turner, Captain Planet's cartoon adventures are known to a generation of children and he is now using his green superpowers to persuade staff at Turner to be even  more environmentally friendly!

At Turner's Soho headquarters 100% of waste is now recycled. There are recyling points around the building and everything goes to a recycling plant where it is sorted and items that previously went to landfill are now recycled too.

Turner's Environmental Policy is promoted by CSR, the Environmental Commitee and  'Enviro Champs' throughout the company and our 'Turn Turner Green' campaign. Turner works with The Carbon Trust and Envido to help it reduce its carbon footprint and help its staff and viewers do the same.

All copier paper is recycled * All paper in the washrooms is recycled * Every floor has recycling stations * All waste goes to a recycling plant * New cleaning patterns mean the lights now go out at night * CNN, Cartoon Network and TCM promote WWF’s Earth Hour * We use Ecover products in the kitchens * The staff magazine is now electronic * We are replacing desk TVs with fewer wall monitors * 84 power monitors are installed around the building * ‘Intelliplugs’ automatically switch off power in meeting rooms * All new suppliers have to answer an environmental questionnaire * Sensor taps and flushers in the washrooms save water and energy * Cycle To Work scheme with space in the garage * All copiers automatically print double sided * Fairtrade drinks machines throughout the building * China and glass instead of paper cups – and all are recycled * Environmental volunteering opportunities * Replaced air-con chillers with most environmentally friendly models available * All light fittings now use high frequency energy saving bulbs * Solar reflective film on windows now reduces heat build up and so uses less air-con * and much, much more.
