On June 20 the we celebrate World Refugee Day. This year, the theme is protection, the heart and soul of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. With more than 30 million refugees in the world, the challenge of protection is enormous. Yet, through commitment and hard work, UNHCR is able to make a difference. Since 1951, UNHCR has helped well over 50 million people successfully restart their lives, earning two Nobel Peace Prizes in the process. Today, UNHCR protects refugees in 117 countries around the world. For us, protection is about securing the basic rights of refugees. Protection is about providing food and shelter, legal assistance, education, and much more. For the refugees we help, protection is a glimmer of hope and a promise of a new beginning.
